My Oasis is Found
Current mood: exhausted
Category: Life
As the days slip by here, I awake each morning and look for my Oasis;
my relief from the heat, from the exhaustion, and from the general
malaise of this country. Each day, I awake to nothing more than my own
hopes and expectations. Nothing more.
For now, my own hopes seem to be enough to keep me going. The energy
to go through the day is supplied only by me. We have no rest here.
There is no recharge, save for those scant hours during the day when
we can sit down and take off our boots for the night. We work and we
work hoping that we will be closer to our goal... some goal... any
goal will do. Time after time again we finish our task just to be
blindsided by the next one, and again the enticement looms ahead.
"Hurry up, finish it fast, the sooner you finish the sooner you rest!"
Even when we rest, the sun beats down and saps our strength. It
crashes upon us and drowns us in sweat, until the simplest of tasks
become difficult. At night we fall asleep hoping that tomorrow we will
find our oasis. Maybe then we can face the rest of our time here.
Maybe there will be something to come along and lift us, energize us,
and make it easier to to go on for a few more days.
We cannot do this on our own. Our Oasis is drying. Send us the water
we need to carry on. We need your love and support more and more each
day that passes. The more time we spend here, the worse it gets. So
please... don't let us down. We are your sons and daughters. We are
your brothers and sisters. We are your friends and lovers. We are your
soldiers.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Okay, so I'm in a dramatic mood. What can I say, it's freakin hot
here, and I just started lunch. The sweat is still drenching me, and
I've been sitting here in the AC writing this for the last 15 minutes
or so. Forgive me if my mind wanders towards the exaggerated.
I meant what I said though... about the support. Every letter and
package that arrives instantly puts a smile on our faces. Even through
the worst day, I have seen men jump up and sprint to get their mail.
(I would have included women, but there are no women in my unit... so
there...)
I was discussing this with my friends here, and we all agree that even
a box full of tissue paper is still a box... with our name on it.
Sometimes that's enough. We don't really care what's inside (okay,
sometimes we do... can I please get my Hitchiker's Guide to the
Galaxy?), it's the fact that someone cared enough to go to the post
office and send something. Things aren't realy as bad as I made them
seem in my post above, but they are still tiring. We do get sleep and
some free time, but out here it never feels like it's enough, you
know? Anyways, just make sure you keep in touch with your soldier,
even if they don't write/call/mail you back. The days drain a lot out
of us, so don't be surprised if your soldier has little or no energy
at the end of the day. Just write/call/mail them anyways. It will mean
the world to them... it definitely gets me through my days. Everyone
who reads this, you are my Oasis. It's all of you that keep me sane
